History:
The area of San Marcos CA first began when the Spaniards fled the San Luis Rey Mission in 1797 and came upon a fertile valley in the hills. They named the area “Los Vallecitos de San Marcos,” which meant “Little Valleys of Saint Mark.” Over the next nearly 90 years the area was bought, sold, and given away to family members. In 1887, the San Marcos Land Company bought most of the land and began to divide and develop the area. By 1896, San Marcos was developing into a thriving community with a growing population. Water from the Colorado River first arrived in the San Marcos CA area in 1956 and the city began to flourish. The city of San Marcos CA became incorporated on January 28, 1963 and by the 1970’s it was the 3rd fastest-growing city in the state. The city of San Marcos continues to grow due to the many benefits the community has to offer.
Activities and Recreation:
San Marcos CA is home to an extensive master parks and trails program offering many city parks and community recreation centers that offer great classes and activities for residents of all ages. The city is dedicated to offering its residents great parks and recreation centers and by 2010 the City of San Marcos CA will have a total of 17 parks. San Marcos California residents enjoy the cooperative and cultural programs as well as easy access to lakes and beaches.
San Marcos California is also home to North County San Diego’s ‘Old California Restaurant Row,’ as well as great shopping centers like Creekside Marketplace, Grand Plaza, and Nordahl Center.
