Welcome to the North County San Diego city of Oceanside! With an annual average temperature of 70 degrees its no wonder why Oceanside CA approximately 178,000 residents call this beach city home. And talk about location! Oceanside California is a costal beach city located 35 miles north of San Diego, 83 miles south of Los Angeles, and right next to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.
History:
Before it was incorporated in 1888, Oceanside California originally began as a retreat for the ranching families in the area who enjoyed seeing the “ocean-side.” Eventually the name “Oceanside” stuck and the town began to grow rapidly. The growth of the Railroad and agriculture in the area contributed to Oceanside CA rapid growth. The city prospered in the 1920’s and many movies were filmed in the city during that decade. The population of Oceanside CA tripled between the 1940’s and 1950’s mostly due the nearby addition of Camp Pendleton, the nation’s largest Marine Corps Base.
Activities and Recreation:
Oceanside California is home to roughly 30 city parks and 4 recreation centers offering many great classes and activities for residents of all ages. Oceanside CA is also home to 2 municipal swim centers and one senior center. Residents of Oceanside California enjoy the city’s 3.5 miles of public beaches. You can always find children enjoying the playground located on the beach or residents strolling and biking along the pier or paths. The Oceanside Pier is a 1,600 foot fishing pier complete with a bait and tackle shop and a restaurant. Oceanside California is also home to a 1,000-slip public marina. Some favorite museums of the loacals include the California Surf Museum and the Oceanside Museum of Art. Another local favorite attraction in the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. This Mission was established in 1798 and is Californias “king of all Missions”.
